This is crazy. I'm going back to record music off the radio. Next they'll be suing the radio stations too for sharing music over the air.

To find out who's sharing files appears to me to be a voilation of civil rights. Would it be legal for companies to do wiretapping too?

The record companies make it seem like they're doing the artists such a favor, but in reality, it's the record companies that really benefit.

I've tried to push for people who talk to the press about LionShare to mention open source and mention its origins. LionShare does use a modified limewire core and a small portion of the limewire gui.

The problem that we have is that as soon as limewire is mentioned, then people think music piracy and start to misconstrue how LionShare will be used and think that is will be essentially another open Gnutella network.

"The university was the first to buy wholeheartedly into the Big Four record label cartel’s University Marketing Scheme whereby the cartel doesn’t sue students if they buy its product."

Sadly this is true, Lionshare started well before (and completely independant) of the whole Napster thing though.

"Penn emphasises that LionShare was funded by Mellon. However nowhere in its rambling report does Penn mention that LionShare couldn’t have been started in the first place without LimeWire GPL (General Public License) code."

Not in the high level report no, but this is mentioned all over the site. Lionshare itself is (obviously) GPL as well. And it COULD have been started without Limewire, but why reinvent the wheel when Limewire already did what we wanted and allowed us to focus on adding security stuff and additional searchable adacemic metadata?

And people ask "What is Google going to do with 4 billion dollars? The issue that I see however is that I don't believe they could ever build a network vast enough to serve the population without using other carriers.

Afterall if we're talking video, voice and music you're talking broadband, and that may take provisioning connections with multiple carriers. That is if you want to reach the average Joe in Iowa.
